Seth Godin On Neil Young
I couldn’t disagree more with this statement by one of my favorite marketing guys:
It’s what you say, most of the time, not how you say it.
Great content is essential, especially in music, but if it’s not delivered in a way that’s appealing to the audience (I’m looking at you Tom Waits) then it’s not going to achieve the level of success that it could.
The opposite of Godin’s remark has been a maxim of mine for years - I’m a firm believer that “it’s not what you say but how you say it.” A good storyteller / presenter / artist can make even mundane content great.
I’m also fond of the saying “never let the truth get in the way of a good story” but that’s an entirely different topic altogether…
