Zero - 1-18-07 - Cervantes

Jennie and I kicked off the 2007 concert series with a trip to see the latest incarnation of Zero play the first of three nights at Cervantes. While Zero is probably my least favorite Kimock-related band I couldn’t resist the combination of Melvin Seals and Kimock on the same stage - and getting to see Donna and Jerry Joseph for the first (and probably last) time along with the seemingly ever-present Martin Fierro was an added bonus.

Some random thoughts:

  • Cervantes is a cool venue - the closest place that I have seen that captures the vibe of a place like the Great American Music Hall in SF.
  • The crowd that Zero draws is impossible to characterize but was a lot of fun. Guy next to me was wearing a purple silk shirt with a custom screenprint of Jimi Hendrix on it and pulled out a piece of cheese cake to eat at set-break, an unorthodox move to say the least. He was not the weirdest person there.
  • Melvin Seals, all 400+ pounds of him, is hands-down the best keyboard player of all time.

  • I didn’t understand a single word that Martin Fierro said all night (and he said a lot).
  • Kimock stood for most of the night and keeping in perfect character, didn’t smile once. Pretty cool.
  • Donna Jean was wearing mom-jeans.
  • Kimock’s 14 or 15 year old kid played a second drum kit all night, and was great. “Please excuse John from school for the next week, he has 3 shows in Denver…”
